Just a dusting

We just got a dusting of snow Friday night. It "flaked" off and on yesterday for a short while then the sun came out late yesterday evening and it's beautiful here today. Bright, sunny, not a cloud in the sky and about 65 degrees. A little windy, but I'll take it. My azaleas made it through; Joe covered them with burlap sacks last night.

He planted these for me a couple of years ago to remind me of South Carolina. They are dark pink and white. I like the pink ones best.

No Snow Yet.....

Jann and I decided to take a "holiday" today (we try to do that in the months where there is no holiday) and stay at home. I'm cleaning house (for once - don't everyone drop dead at the same time!) and doing laundry; things I can't find time for on the weekends (because I'm working at Kohl's ya know). Anyway, there's no snow yet; they say it will start in the "metro" area around 5:00 PM and go through tomorrow afternoon (yuch!).

Here's a not very focused picture (we were at the back of the room) of the remaining seniors (5 down from 7) with their sponsor at the dinner last night. Kaitlyn is in the lime dress, which she made in Clothing I last semester. Her BFF is in the pink dress.

Also, Crystal, I've done this much on your shawl (probably got about 58 more inches to go!).

It's Supposed to What?!!!???

You guessed it. It's supposed to snow tomorrow, A LOT. They're saying our area may only get 1-3 inches but the panhandle may get over a foot. Agghhh! Just when I thought it was really spring! I am so NOT looking forward to this.

In other news, last night Kaitlyn got an award (along with 2 other pom girls) from the Norman Athletic Association (NAA) and The Norman Transcript (our newspaper) for 2009 Outstanding Athlete in Pom. This was the first year they have EVER recognized the cheer and pom girls (even though they probably put in more hours for practice than any other sport AND they have to go to almost every sport to cheer for both boys and girls games/matches). She was unable to attend (she had to work), Joe was unable to attend (had to get a haircut), so I went up and accepted her award. It was a very nice placque but her name was misspelled (Kailyn) so I left it there to be fixed. Tonight is the annual pom dinner for the girls and their parents. They will give out gag awards between themselves and get a DVD of their year's efforts. The parents just get free food. So I may have pictures to post later; depends on how well the girls cooperate.

It's Spring!!!

Yeah, it's Spring! Now we get to watch the skies for storms/tornadoes until July (boo). Yesterday, Kaitlyn got her first (and hopefully not last) scholarship offer from OU. She got the Boren Award (named after the university's president David Boren). It's $1,000 for her freshman year. Kristen received the same one. I never have figured out exactly what that award is for but we'll take it! Both girls kept a 4.0 GPA for their entire 12 years of school so maybe it has something to do with that. Anyway, happy spring to my friends and family!!!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

Greetings from sunny (and hot) Oklahoma. It's spring break here - Kaitlyn and Joe are skiing in Winter Park, CO while Kristen and I are enjoying the 85 degree heat here in Norman. I finished another prayer shawl. This one I did with some leftover balls of yarn. I tried to keep it to red, white and blue. This is the first time I did a triangular shawl. I really liked the way it turned out and I think I'll make more. During Lent, our prayer shawl circle meets every Monday evening to get as many made as we can. They are blessed in a church service the week before Easter. Then we have a spring "tea" with bonnets and all the Sunday after Easter. The shawls are kept with the care ministry until someone needs one to give out. We have given out a total of 1,000 shawls since we started the ministry 3 years ago in February. That's a lot of busy hands! I love making them. The last one I gave to Joe's mother (below) when his step-dad died a few weeks ago. It's strange, but it took me sooo long to make it (like 5 months), but God knew that if I finished too early I would give it to the church and he needed me to give it to her. God always knows who the shawls will go to when we start them.

I have only given two others to family members. A beautiful yellow one to my cousin Valerie before she died of lung cancer, and a beautiful white one to Joe's Aunt Cindy, when her husband died last summer. The one I gave to Valerie:

The one I gave to Aunt Cindy:
If you ever need me to make one for you, please let me know. If I can't make one soon enough, we do send them all over the United States from the church (you don't have to belong to our church). And we don't send them for sad reasons only. Sometimes they are sent when ladies have babies, get married, or a myriad of other reasons. You can also start a prayer shawl ministry in your church, too. We don't just make shawls either. We make scarves to give to college students, graduating high school seniors, to give out during the Mexico mission trips. We make dish cloths for the new brides at the church, baby blankets for new babies. It's pretty much anything goes. All of our yarn is provided for free. That's how our ministry got started. A lady at the church died and her husband donated all her yarn (a WHOLE GARAGE FULL). It took several people weeks to separate it all and put it in bins. Other people at the church donate money to purchase more yarn for us. We have about twenty 18-gallon tubs full of every kind and color of yarn you can imagine. Once a month, we hold a meeting and invite anyone that wants to learn how to knit or crochet to our meetings. We've had girls, boys, men and women attend.

Today's a Big Day

This morning, Kaitlyn auditioned for the OU Pom squad. They have 6 audition dates each year. Monday, March 9 they send out invitations to the ones they want to actually try-out for the squad in April. Kaitlyn looked beautiful this morning when she left. They had to wear a colorful bra top (hers was a Victoria's Secret neon yellow bra that she had embellished with black and white crystals along with a zebra bow in the front.) with black dance pants. She was tanned, toned and ready for her audition. I can't wait to hear how it went. Think good thoughts for her this weekend. I'll be on pins and needles until Monday!!!
